Our Mission
Darpana was launched in 2025 with the express purpose of supporting individuals – and their loved ones – who are impacted by difficulties discarding possessions. We aim to support those with hoarding, clutter, organization, and related challenges. The culture and traditions we strive to promote are best captured by the words of Chuang-Tzu, who famously wrote, “The perfect man employs his mind as a mirror; it grasps nothing; it refuses nothing; it receives, but does not keep”.
At Darpana Institute, our mission is to provide easily accessible research and education for the benefit of individuals – and their loved ones – with hoarding, clutter, and more. We implement compassion alongside practical solutions that empower our community to improve their quality of life and reclaim their space!
Who We Are
We are a dedicated team of researchers, educators, consultants, and mental health professionals passionate about addressing the challenges associated with hoarding behavior. As a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization, we are committed to conducting evidence-based research and developing educational resources that promote awareness and effective strategies for managing hoarding tendencies.
What We Do
Research
Hoarding poses unique challenges to mental health, public safety, and housing stability. Our research addresses these complexities to create practical and lasting solutions. At Darpana Institute, we are committed to conducting rigorous, evidence-based research to advance the understanding of hoarding behavior. Our research explores the psychophysiology mechanisms underlying this behavior, evaluates effective interventions, and establishes best practices to support individuals and communities. By sharing our findings, we aim to empower the public with actionable insights and data-driven strategies.
Through partnerships with leading universities and clinical practitioners, we uncover innovative and cross-disciplinary insights in addressing hoarding behavior. With the support of colleagues and generous donors from around the world – our findings help empower individuals, families, and communities affected by hoarding, providing them with tools and strategies to foster healthier living environments.
Public Education
We provide workshops, webinars, shows, social media, and more, to educate the public about hoarding tendencies, their underlying features, and practical approaches for support. We aim to reduce stigma, promote empathy, and empower individuals, families, and communities with practical tools and strategies to address the challenges associated with hoarding behaviors effectively.
Our initiatives aim to engage individuals, families, mental health professionals, and community leaders in meaningful dialogue, fostering a culture that values well-being and enhances quality for those impacted by hoarding.
Community Support
We believe in the power of community and provide resources for individuals seeking support. Our website offers a wealth of information, including talk-shows, scientific articles, newsletters, and links to other professional services. Whether you’re a caregiver, a professional, or simply someone passionate about improving lives, there’s a role for you in our mission.
